According to the developer, the campaign has been completed on Agent difficulty, with steady 60fps performance reported during testing.

This is not the cancelled Xbox 360 remaster, nor simply an emulator bundled with a launcher. The project builds on the community’s GoldenEye decompilation, compiling reconstructed game code for PC. Its architecture draws on the Perfect Dark PC port, with an important technical qualification: the Nintendo 64’s graphics coprocessor is still reproduced in software, while graphics output uses OpenGL. “Native port” therefore describes how the game code runs, not the complete absence of emulation.

Modern controls, but unfinished business

The port supports keyboard and mouse controls, a modern twin-stick controller layout, persistent saves and an in-game settings overlay. Resolution, anti-aliasing, texture filtering, field of view and mouse sensitivity are adjustable, giving players more flexibility without replacing the original game’s visual assets.

Version 0.2.2 concentrates on practical fixes. It addresses two Linux and Steam Deck crashes associated with destructible objects and explosion-heavy combat, switches front-end menu navigation to the left analogue stick, and adds a Quit to Desktop option to the settings overlay, a useful addition for controller-only sessions.

There are still substantial rough edges. Bond can appear misplaced or spin during cutscenes, particle colours can behave incorrectly, and distant scenery can disappear on larger maps. Proper widescreen support is not implemented: selecting 16:9 currently stretches the 4:3 image rather than correctly expanding the view. Gunfire audio also has known problems. This is a playable development release, not a finished remaster.

AI-assisted development, built on community work

Another notable aspect is how the port was developed. Its documentation describes one person directing two AI coding agents: a locally running Qwen model and Claude Code. Tasks passed between them through shared written notes, with the human developer handling direction, integration and testing that the agents could not perform themselves.

That does not mean AI recreated GoldenEye from nothing. The project explicitly credits the years of work behind the existing decompilation and the software graphics implementation reused from the Perfect Dark PC port. The experiment concerns adapting that foundation to another platform, including the difficult bugs caused by moving old console code onto modern computers. The development notes document the process and its failures alongside the results.

Bring your own ROM

Players must supply their own NTSC-U, or US, GoldenEye 007 ROM in .z64 format. Neither a ROM nor the game’s assets are included. PAL and Japanese ROMs are not yet supported, and there are currently no macOS or ARM builds.

With the prebuilt packages, installation involves unpacking the download and placing the ROM at
data/ge007.ntsc-final.z64
beside the executable. The required assets are generated automatically on first launch.

True widescreen and broader platform support remain on the roadmap. LAN multiplayer is only under consideration, with development not yet started; online multiplayer is not currently planned. There is no fixed release date for version 1.0. For now, the attraction is a new way to revisit the original GoldenEye campaign, not a promise that every part of the N64 experience has already made the journey intact.

Try it: https://github.com/jkdansereau/goldeneye-pc-port

GoldenEye 007 PC Port 0.2.2 puts the Nintendo 64 original on Windows, Linux and Steam Deck as compiled game code, not an emulator wrapper.
