Gloom Reforged 2.4.0 gives the Amiga shooter another tune-up, with paid updates ahead

Gloom’s corridors are getting another round of attention. Gloom Reforged, Andiweli’s enhanced version of Black Magic’s Amiga shooter, builds on the original source code with support for ECS and AGA machines alongside Picasso96 graphics cards. Its aim is to preserve the game’s atmosphere and gameplay while improving its presentation and usability.
The latest GitHub release, version 2.4.0, published on 8 October, concentrates on performance and compatibility. Picasso96 output benefits from faster memory copying in place of redundant pixel-by-pixel preparation, while revised display-mode detection fixes a crash affecting MediatorTX systems. The accompanying GloomBench benchmark incorporates the latest rendering optimisations, and the installer now offers separate options for AGA/P96 use and the additional data files needed for ECS/EHB.
The wider project brings reworked weapons and HUD elements, smoother transitions between light and darkness, improved distance fog, optional reflections and blob shadows. Support also extends to Gloom Deluxe, Gloom 3 and Zombie Massacre. These additions come with a substantial hardware appetite: the developer strongly recommends a PiStorm or a 68060 running at around 100MHz to maintain frame rates near the engine’s 25fps ceiling. ECS compatibility therefore does not mean an unexpanded Amiga will deliver a comfortable experience.
There is also a change ahead for distribution. The developer says 2.4.0 will remain available free through GitHub and Aminet, while version 3.0 and subsequent updates will be offered exclusively as paid releases on itch.io. Planned additions include genuine 640×480 and 854×480 rendering, beyond simply enlarging the existing image. Those higher-resolution rendering features are announced for future updates.
The itch.io page currently lists the 2.4.0 package at €6.99 or more, with access to future updates. For Amiga owners curious about the changes, the free release provides a way to try Reforged before deciding whether to support its next stage.
