Super Mario Bros. CD Is Still in Development, FamicomCD Confirms

The fan-made Super Mario World ROM hack is still being worked on, with its creators promising to share more when the time is right.

Super Mario Bros. CD remains in development. In an update published on 23 September 2026, FamicomCD reassured followers that work on the project continues and thanked the community for its support over the past few years. The message appeared on the team’s official X and Bluesky accounts.

“Super Mario Bros. CD is still in development. We will share more when the time is right.”

The announcement is a status update rather than a release reveal: it does not provide a launch date, a development timetable or a date for the next showcase. For those following the project, the takeaway is straightforward—development continues, but the team is not ready to reveal its next steps.

A CD-inspired take on classic Mario

Despite its name, Super Mario Bros. CD is not an official Nintendo release or a rediscovered commercial game. It is an unofficial ROM hack of Super Mario World, built around the idea of what a Super Mario Bros. adventure might have looked like on a CD-based console. The team’s website explicitly states that it is not affiliated with Nintendo.

The project also remains connected to its Super Nintendo roots. Its official page lists support for compatible emulators and original Super NES hardware using an FXPak Pro flash cartridge, with a separate compatibility guide covering supported setups.

There is already a demo to try

Players do not have to wait for the finished game to get a taste of the project. The official download page lists the February 2025 demo, version 1.2, alongside the older March 2024 speedrun competition demo, version 2.2. These are separate builds, so the higher version number should not be mistaken for a newer general demo.

The team also provides installation guidance. Its automatic patcher requires Windows, an internet connection and a player-supplied ROM; this is a ROM-hacking project rather than a standalone PC release.

For now, the existing demo offers a way to explore the concept while development continues. The next reveal will come when the team is ready—not on a newly announced schedule.
