Kyvos: The Amiga Cube That Tames QEMU

Running AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS through QEMU can feel like assembling flat-pack furniture with half the instructions missing. Kyvos replaces the command-line wrestling match with buttons, menus and a remarkably civilised setup wizard.

QEMU is one of those astonishing pieces of software that can imitate entire computers, processors and hardware configurations. It is powerful, flexible and capable of doing things that once required a room full of ageing equipment. It can also be about as welcoming as a tax return.

Kyvos steps into that gap. Created by George Sokianos, it is a graphical frontend designed to make QEMU-based AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS systems easier to create, configure and launch on Windows, Linux and Intel-based Macs. Its name is pronounced “kee-vos” and comes from the Greek word κύβος, meaning “cube”—a fitting image for a complete virtual computer sitting neatly inside your everyday machine.

Big Power, Fewer Headaches

The main Kyvos window is pleasingly straightforward. Your virtual systems sit in a list on the left, while the right-hand side provides separate areas for general information, hardware, display and storage settings. Pick a machine, inspect its configuration and hit the large play button when you are ready to start it.

Screenshots show multiple environments living together inside the same installation, including AmigaOS 4 systems based on emulated Pegasos 2 and AmigaOne hardware, alongside MorphOS configurations. It looks less like a laboratory experiment and more like a conventional virtual-machine manager—which is exactly the point. Kyvos does not remove QEMU from the equation. It puts a dashboard in front of it.

That distinction matters. Underneath the clean interface is still a serious collection of machine types, virtual processors, disk images, network devices, graphics settings and launch arguments. Kyvos simply handles the tedious assembly work, allowing the user to concentrate on creating a working system rather than repeatedly rebuilding enormous command lines.

For anyone who still wants to look beneath the bonnet, the complete QEMU command can be displayed inside the application. Advanced users can therefore see precisely what Kyvos is preparing, while less experienced users can safely pretend that several paragraphs of parameters do not exist.

Hard Disks Without the Hard Work

Storage configuration is one of those jobs that sounds simple until terms such as QCOW2, virtual controllers and image paths start flying across the screen. Kyvos provides controls for primary, secondary and third hard disks, together with CD images and USB paths. It also includes a dedicated tool for creating new virtual hard-disk images: choose a name, destination, capacity and format, then let the software build it.

This is the sort of practical feature that makes the difference between an emulator being technically possible and genuinely usable. You are still building a computer, but you are doing it through recognisable controls rather than typing every component into a terminal and hoping one misplaced character does not bring the whole operation crashing down.

A setup wizard also assists with locating or downloading supporting components such as QEMU and 7-Zip. It cannot eliminate every compatibility issue—this is specialised PowerPC emulation, not a game-console emulator with a single ROM button—but it gives users a clear route through the process.

Kyvos does not make QEMU less powerful. It makes that power considerably less annoying.

A Manual That Actually Earns the Name

Many small software projects treat documentation as an optional extra, usually consisting of three sentences written six months before the current version was released. Kyvos takes the opposite approach.

The original edition comes with a 114-page illustrated manual covering installation, dependencies, initial configuration, hard-disk creation and the construction of different virtual systems. It includes guidance for AmigaOS 4 machines based on Pegasos 2, AmigaOne and Sam460 configurations, as well as MorphOS installation and host-folder sharing through Samba. It also discusses QEMU incompatibilities and includes an FAQ.

That level of documentation is important because Kyvos cannot legally or practically provide every ingredient itself. Users still require the appropriate operating-system installation material, firmware, drivers and licences for the systems they intend to create. Kyvos organises the workshop; it does not quietly fill every drawer with copyrighted parts. The result is not quite “click once and an Amiga appears,” but it is far closer than constructing the same environment manually.

The Donationware Edition

There is one important detail hiding behind the attractive proposition: the page linked here contains the original Kyvos branch, currently available as donationware. Version 1.8.2 remains usable as a way to test Kyvos on Windows, Linux and Intel macOS, but it is now considered the legacy release and will not receive further updates. It also does not include an executable for Apple Silicon Macs. The final listed update, dated 2 March 2026, fixed an uninitialised QEMU-related field in the welcome window.

Ongoing development has moved to Kyvos v2. The newer branch expands the concept to include AROS, adds native availability for Apple Silicon and continues introducing new storage, graphics and system-management features. The original donationware edition therefore works best as a test drive: it lets compatible users discover whether Kyvos suits their setup before considering the actively developed version.

There is another caveat for AmigaOS 4 users. Kyvos can assist with configurations that use the experimental VirtIO-GPU driver, but the driver remains in beta testing, is not publicly distributed and is not included with the application. Access must come through the appropriate A-Eon testing arrangements.

Who Is It For?

Kyvos is aimed squarely at the enthusiast who wants to explore the later branches of the Amiga family without dedicating an increasingly expensive collection of physical hardware to the job. It is particularly appealing to three groups: curious newcomers who want to experiment with AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS but find raw QEMU configuration intimidating, existing Amiga users who want a convenient virtual environment for software testing, experimentation or portable access to their systems, and experienced emulator users who already understand QEMU but would rather manage several configurations through a clean interface than maintain a folder full of launch scripts.

It will not turn a modest computer into a perfect replacement for every PowerPC-based Amiga system, and it cannot make software licences or hardware compatibility concerns disappear. What it can do is transform a fiddly, error-prone procedure into something that looks and behaves like a proper desktop application.

Whether you are discovering AmigaOS, testing several systems or already know QEMU inside out, Kyvos removes much of the tedious work without hiding the power underneath.

The Verdict

Kyvos is the sort of utility the Amiga world needs more of: focused, thoroughly documented and built to remove unnecessary friction. The interface is not overloaded with decorative nonsense. It lists your machines, presents the settings that matter and launches the selected environment. Behind it sits all the complexity of QEMU, but most of that complexity remains exactly where it belongs—out of the way until you genuinely need it.

The donationware release is now frozen and lacks support for Apple Silicon, so it should be approached as an accessible introduction rather than the future of the project. On a compatible Windows, Linux or Intel Mac system, however, it remains a practical way to discover whether modern Amiga emulation is for you.

Powerful enough for experts, approachable enough for everyone else and supported by a manual thick enough to stop a door: Kyvos turns QEMU from an engineering project into something resembling a product.
