Still Booting
Commodore went under in 1994. The Commodore 64 never got the memo, and one developer has spent the better part of a decade building it the operating system it always deserved.

Somewhere right now, a beige breadbox of a computer, a machine older than most of the people reading this, is doing something faintly miraculous. It’s showing multiple desktops. It’s copying a folder tree from one drive to another with a couple of mouse clicks. It’s playing chiptune music in the background while its owner checks a calendar, sets an alarm, and then, because why not, pulls up Wikipedia.
The computer is a Commodore 64, introduced in 1982, powered by a 1 MHz processor and 64 kilobytes of memory, less RAM than the icon files on your phone. It remains, by most reckonings, the best-selling single model of computer ever made, with sales in the many millions before Commodore itself collapsed into bankruptcy in 1994. The company died. The machine, stubbornly, did not.
And as of this year it’s running version 1.09 of a piece of software that has quietly become one of the most improbable ongoing projects in computing: C64 OS.
The Operating System That Showed Up Forty Years Late
C64 OS is not an emulator, not a museum piece, and not a weekend hack. It’s a full modern-style operating environment for original Commodore 64 hardware: mouse, pull-down menus, a proper file manager, the works, built and sold as a real commercial product by a one-man Canadian outfit called OpCoders Inc., the company of developer Gregory Nacu.
The pitch on the tin is that it makes the old machine “powerful, easy and intuitive,” and the specifics back the swagger up. The bundled File Manager is genuinely slick: a tabbed interface that lets you sit in four directories at once, recursive copy and move across whole directory trees, favourites, recents, a path bar, keyboard shortcuts for everything, and support for up to five drives connected simultaneously. An App Launcher gives you multiple desktops, each with its own name, backdrop, and color-coded aliases, one desktop for productivity, say, another loaded with your favourite games, including ordinary old C64 software that predates the OS entirely.
The numbers are the kind that make modern developers feel vaguely ashamed of their gigabyte-sized apps. The system ships with eleven applications and forty utilities: calculator, calendar, memo pad, SID music player, timer and stopwatch, text viewer, even a memory inspector plus twenty-eight hardware drivers, more than twenty-five shared libraries, twenty-nine reusable interface Toolkit classes, and twenty data-type loaders. All of it squeezed into a machine with less working memory than a single emoji-laden text thread.

The showstopper, though, is what happens when you add a RAM Expansion Unit, a period-correct upgrade cartridge the community still manufactures. With one attached, C64 OS enables Fast App Switching and lets you keep up to thirty applications open at the same time, flicking between them the way you’d Alt-Tab on anything built this century. On a computer whose contemporaries were the Walkman and the DeLorean, that’s not retro-computing. That’s necromancy with a user manual.
The Man Who Wouldn’t Let Go
Every improbable machine has an improbable human behind it, and Nacu fits the bill. His origin story runs through the SX-64, Commodore’s legendarily impractical “luggable” portable, a suitcase-shaped C64 with a five-inch CRT and a built-in floppy drive, which he acquired in 2000 and then modified into something closer to a hot rod: accelerator board, hard-drive interface, CD-ROM, Ethernet, high-speed serial, the lot.
That tinkering eventually spawned two parallel obsessions. One is C64 Luggable, his ongoing project to build the portable Commodore the eighties never could: vertically oriented, fifteen-inch LCD, SD and USB storage instead of floppies, Ethernet as standard, four controller ports on the front so he can haul the thing to friends’ houses for multiplayer nights. It doubles as a reference design: he publishes it so others can build their own.
The other obsession became C64 OS itself, which shipped its 1.0 in 2022 after years of public development, documented in exhaustive monthly essays on his weblog. And “exhaustive” undersells it: the site’s technical deep dives on memory management, on interface toolkits, on the eternal question of getting a 1980s home computer onto the modern internet, read less like release notes and more like a running graduate seminar in making small machines do big things. Recent entries review new-old hardware like a reborn NEOS mouse and the latest THEC64 handheld, because the scene he writes for is, improbably, still shipping products.

That scene is the other half of the story. Nacu also maintains the Commodore 8-Bit Buyer’s Guide, a photographed, mini-reviewed catalog of the hundreds of expansion boards, storage devices, network adapters, and kits you can buy today for a computer discontinued before the web existed. He started it, he says, after returning from a long hiatus and discovering, through IRC channels and message boards, in dribs and drabs, just how alive the hardware ecosystem still was. The Guide exists so the next returning enthusiast doesn’t have to haunt forums to find out.
Software You Can Hold
Here is perhaps the most charming part: C64 OS is sold the old way. Buy a copy and you get a professionally printed user’s guide, a custom-labeled SD “System Card” with the OS pre-installed and ready to boot, and two stickers, because some traditions are sacred. The card also carries installation tools for moving the system onto other mass-storage devices, plus pre-built hard-drive images for the VICE emulator, a wink to the pragmatists who run their Commodores in software.
Then, having sold you a boxed product like it’s 1987, Nacu turns around and supports it like it’s a subscription service, minus the subscription. Updates are free. Version 1.05 added a gorgeous community-made boot screen. The new 1.09 release adds a Software Center: browse, find, download, an app store, in effect, for a machine from the Reagan administration. One purchase covers installation on all your Commodores, real or emulated, and OpCoders now runs a proper online store with a cart, extras, and a growing line-up of companion hardware.
Why Bother? Wrong Question
It would be easy to file all this under nostalgia, and easier still to be wrong about it. Talk to anyone in this corner of computing and a different theme emerges: constraint as a creative discipline, and ownership as a kind of luxury.

A Commodore 64 does not push notifications at you. It does not phone home, auto-update itself into a different product overnight, or brick when a server in Virginia has a bad day. Every byte on that SD card is accounted for. The machine is finished and yet, thanks to one determined developer and a community that never dispersed, it keeps growing anyway.
There’s a lesson in that for an industry that treats three-year-old hardware as landfill. The best-selling computer of all time is pushing forty-five, and its newest operating system just got an app store. Your laptop should live so long.
