Amiga and Hyperion Settle Legal Disputes, Reshape AmigaOS Future

Amiga Corporation and Hyperion Entertainment have ended their long-running legal disputes, bringing new agreements for AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4 and Commodore licensing.

Amiga Corporation and Hyperion Entertainment have reached a new settlement that ends their long-running legal disputes and establishes a clearer framework for the future development of AmigaOS. The agreement was announced by both companies on 4 August 2026 and replaces the 2009 agreement between Amiga and Hyperion. According to Amiga Corporation, Hyperion will continue developing and distributing AmigaOS 4 under licence, while the situation surrounding the classic 68K branch of AmigaOS will change significantly.

Hyperion’s rights to distribute AmigaOS 3.2 and the forthcoming AmigaOS 3.3 will now be transitional, with distribution required to end no later than 31 December 2027. Amiga Corporation says it will continue directing the development and evolution of AmigaOS for the 68K platform after that point.

As part of the settlement, Hyperion will also provide Amiga Corporation with the source code, revision history and documentation for AmigaOS 3.1.4, including its fixes and updates. Amiga says this material will be used in its future 68K AmigaOS development. Code originating from AmigaOS 4 and subsequently backported into AmigaOS 3.2 or 3.3 is excluded from the transfer. The agreement also removes restrictions that could otherwise prevent developers and contractors currently associated with Hyperion’s AmigaOS work from contributing to future Amiga Corporation projects.

Hyperion, meanwhile, has confirmed that it intends to continue development of both AmigaOS 3.3 and AmigaOS 4.2. Hyperion director Timothy De Groote described ending the lawsuits as a way of allowing resources and attention to return to AmigaOS development rather than legal disputes. The settlement is only part of a broader restructuring announced by Amiga Corporation. A separate licensing agreement has also been signed with Commodore International Corporation, the company currently holding the Commodore and C= trademarks.

Amiga Corporation says it retains copyrights covering historical Commodore and Amiga software, firmware, documentation, hardware designs and related material, while recognising Commodore International Corporation’s ownership of the Commodore trademarks. Under the new arrangement, Amiga has licensed historical CBM 8-bit software and documentation to Commodore for use in its products.

Amiga Corporation also says it is working to preserve historical Commodore and Amiga material, including source code, binaries, documentation, artwork, photographs, videos and corporate records. Among the projects specifically mentioned are the restoration of the classic SoftVoice speech synthesis technology to AmigaOS and the preparation of several historical Boing Ball demos for release.

Taken together, the agreements represent one of the more significant changes to the legal and development landscape surrounding Amiga software in years. AmigaOS 4 remains with Hyperion under licence, Hyperion has a defined period in which to complete and distribute its remaining AmigaOS 3 releases, and Amiga Corporation is positioning itself to take a more direct role in the future of the 68K operating system. For a platform whose history has frequently been complicated by fragmented ownership and lengthy legal disputes, the important part may simply be that the direction of travel is finally becoming clearer.

Scramble Arcade brings Konami’s 1981 shoot ’em up to the Commodore Plus/4 in a new 64K, PAL-only conversion. Released as freeware on 18 July 2026, it was coded by Epy, with additional graphics by Unreal and music by Csabo, and even includes support for SNES controllers. The game also placed second in the Árok 2026 Game Dev Compo and is available now from Plus/4 World.

Darklands Restoration Project Rebuilds the 1992 RPG for Modern Systems

The Darklands Restoration Project is rebuilding MicroProse’s 1992 RPG through extensive reverse engineering and a modern reimplementation.

The classic 1992 MicroProse RPG Darklands is being painstakingly reconstructed for modern computers through the Darklands Restoration Project, an ambitious effort from Arkana Mechanika Studios.

Rather than creating a loose remake, the project aims to faithfully reimplement the original game in modern C#, using extensive reverse engineering of the original Darklands executable and data. The current development version already reproduces the opening sequence and main menu, supports the Quickstart party and can enter cities, where a growing selection of merchants, churches, markets, alchemy, docks and other interactions have been reconstructed.

The project currently runs through a native SDL2/.NET 10 development host and includes both a Classic presentation preserving the original 320×200 graphics and an optional Enhanced Faithful mode capable of using restored higher-resolution scenery without changing the underlying gameplay. Development is backed by tools including Ghidra, Reko, DOSBox-X and custom verification utilities designed to compare reconstructed behaviour against the original game.

A new video presentation has now been released showing the reconstructed engine in action. The project remains under active development and requires legally obtained original Darklands data to run.
